ampallang piercing

I recently had an exchange of correspondence with a piercer who asked some interesting questions:

I have been piercing for 10 years now in a shop where my husband is the awesome tattoo artist. I just want to be yet another one to thank you for all of your tireless dedication to this industry. I just had a quick question about surface piercings done with polytetrafluoroethylene. At first when these surface piercings became the thing to do around here, I would perform them with the traditional bars for hips, clavicals, Madisons-you name it. I stuck them all with bars. Now this new material seems so much better for healing and does not leave the same scars that the bars do. I just wanted to get your opinion on it. Which is better, the polytetrafluoroethylene or the traditional surface bars?

Below is my exchange with a piercee who received an iron cross (apadravya + ampallang) piercing:

I recently got an ampallang piercing to complete a magic cross. I think the placement is good and that the piecer did a good job. But I would like that to be evaluated.

Also, I have an ileostomy. Though the bag is very clean, it can bump up against the side of the piercing. I have been salt soaking 4 times a day (every time I empty my bag) and washing with antibacterial gel soap twice a day. The piercing, now about a week old, has stopped bleeding.  I kept this routine up for about a month on my apadravya which had the same problem and healed perfectly. I cleared this routine with a doctor before each piercing. My question is does an ampallang have a longer, shorter or the same healing time as an apadravya. My apadravya bled for a week. But the ampallang only bled for a few hour.

My reply:

Dear M.,
If the ampallang passes through your urethra, then it would be expected to take about the same amount of time to heal as the apadravya. If your ampallang does not pass through your urethra, then it could be expected to take longer to heal than the apadravya. They are both subject to bleeding when new, but the apadravya is apt to bleed more than the ampallang, so all of that sounds normal.

You just need to watch for trauma from the jewelry hitting the bag, as impact can delay healing and cause problems like excess scar tissue formation.

It has been a long time since I posted a new video on my clips4sale store.

The newest is of me performing a 10 gauge ampallang piercing (horizontally through the penis head) on a gentleman who already has a stretched Prince Albert piercing. It was shot during my visit to California last month, when I was guest piercing at Anomaly Piercing in Pasadena.

Oh, and it may surprise you to hear his comment: his nipple piercings were more intense than his ampallang (though I didn't perform them for him).

I spent a fantastic day yesterday piercing at Anomaly Body Piercing in Pasadena, CA. It was a blast, and everyone was really great. My first appointment of the day (and the first piercing I performed in several months!) was a 10 gauge ampallang. It went very smoothly, and this is an email I just received from the piercee:

Elayne, I just wanted to let you know how excited I was to have you do my ampallang yesterday. I have got so much out of your book as well as getting a feel for the person you are, someone quite intelligent, passionate and dedicated to her craft. Upon meeting you it's easy to see that you are all of that and a lot more. I love the piercing, I think it looks totally 'hot'. I haven't been able to stop looking at it!! And your placement was 'exactly' where I wanted it. It has been bleeding just a bit but otherwise it feels fine. I could not believe that it didn't hurt nearly as bad as what I was anticipating, but I can imagine that having this piercing done with someone not as skilled could indeed make it much more traumatic.
